Uruguay Cannabis Laws

Uruguay has some of the most progressive cannabis laws globally. In December 2013, Uruguay became the first country to legalize the cultivation, distribution, and consumption of cannabis for recreational purposes.

Legalization occurred in December 2013 during President José Mujica's administration, making recreational cannabis use legal in Uruguay.

The government oversees the entire cannabis industry, including production, distribution, and sales, with licenses required for growers, sellers, and consumers. Individuals can cultivate cannabis plants at home for personal use, with regulations stipulating the number of plants and mandatory registration with the government.

Cannabis clubs, comprising up to 45 members, are permitted to collectively grow a limited quantity of cannabis, subject to governmental regulation.

Pharmacies are authorized to sell cannabis, but buyers must register with the government and are restricted to purchasing 40 grams per month. Non-resident tourists are prohibited from purchasing cannabis in Uruguay.

There are over 300,000 jobs in the cannabis industry. CTU trained me for one of them!
