The 5 best soils for marijuana. Hands in soil planting marijuana.

The 5 Best Soils for Cannabis

If you’re looking to give your cannabis plants the best possible home, check out our list of the 5 best soils for cannabis. We’ve assembled a handy shopping guide to help you select only the highest-quality pre-made soils. Sure, you can make your own soil if you’re an experienced grower. But, ready-to-use soils are convenient and effective mediums for the average grower.

If you want to learn more about the importance of high-quality potting soil and choosing the best potting soil for your grow, check out our blog post: What’s the Best Soil For Growing Weed?

1. FoxFarm Happy Frog Potting Soil

Jumpstart your garden with ready-to-use Happy Frog potting soil from FoxFarm. It’s designed for indoor and outdoor cannabis plants. This pre-made potting soil is amended with soil microbes including mycorrhizae and humic acid. These are meant to encourage nutrient absorption.

Happy Frog potting soil contains other natural ingredients such as bat guano, earthworm castings, and aged forest products. It’s an all-in-one potting soil designed “in the spirit of the Humboldt nation.”

Pro tip: Happy Frog potting soil is designed for container planting. If you’re planning on growing a cannabis plant, use the potting soil in a container. Feel free to add additional fertilizer for improved results.

2. Sun Gro Black Gold All-Organic Potting Mix Plus Fertilizer

Nowadays, organic potting soil is becoming the norm. Unless you’re on a tight budget, Sun Gro’s Black Gold all-organic potting mix plus fertilizer provides your plants with the root support and nutrients the marijuana plant needs.

Its OMRI-listed products mean you’re getting certified organic ingredients. The ingredients have been approved under the USDA National Organic Program for other plants. The all-purpose mix is formulated with all-natural ingredients. It works best with container plantings and raised beds.

Its all-natural ingredients such as Canadian sphagnum peat moss, perlite, bark, and compost provide the ultimate aeration to keep your plants hydrated and healthy. The potting soil contains RESiLIENCE®, their silicone-enriched additive. It’s formulated to enhance plant growth, yields, and your plants’ resistance to wilting.

Pro tip: If you’re not completely satisfied with your results, you can get a refund. Just send the company proof of purchase within six months of purchase. However, we don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

3. Red’s Premium Biochar-Based Soil

Red’s Premium Biochar-based soil is a professional-grade ready-to-use soil mix. It’s packed with vegetation-based compost and worm castings. The soil mixture is designed to create a living soil atmosphere.

Red’s Premium soil’s secret ingredient is its biochar content. Biochar is a soil amendment rich in carbon. It’s believed to be efficient in carbon sequestration and soil health. Biochar is thought to increase soil fertility of acidic soils, improve yields, and protect plants against foliar and soil-borne diseases.

Red’s living soil’s natural mineral sources and ingredients include coco coir, peat moss, perlite, and pumice. They help create a medium that can hold water, buffer pH, moderate nutrient release, and generally optimize nutrient uptake.

Pro tip: Do not use this soil for seed germination. Instead, turn to their Seed Start Pro. This biochar-based soil is meant for container plants.

4. Nature’s Living Soil Organic Super Soil

Nature’s Living Organic Super Soil isn’t an all-in-one solution, but it provides a supercharged amendment to take your growing to the next level. Nature’s Living Soil’s concentrate for photoperiod and autoflowering plants are the ideal addition for all living soil mediums.

Developed by the legendary cannabis grower known as SubCool, the super soil method involves creating layers within a container of different concentrations of nutrients. Simply add the potting soil and concentrate and then water your plants.

Nature’s Living Soil base contains organic earthworm castings, bat guano, bone meal, blood meal, fishbone meal, neem meal, humic acid and so many more natural mineral sources to keep your plants healthy. In some cases, these minerals are found in several forms such as granular and soluble forms.

On top of its natural compost, Nature’s Living Soils contain a wide range of bacteria and fungi.

Pro tip: If you’re planting seedlings and immature plants, make sure to place the super soil in the bottom third of your container. Leave a buffer of regular organic potting soil between the seedling to avoid overwhelming them.

5. Aurora Innovations Roots Organics Formula 707

Roots Organics Formula 707 is intended for growers with a bit more experience. Its peat-based, ready-to-use soil is meant for growers who use larger-than-average containers. In these large-scale grows, Roots Organics’ formula provides greater water holding capacity, less perlite and less pumice, and fewer nutrients.

Formula 707 allows seasoned cannabis growers to customize their soil depending on what they are growing. Add topsoil, liquid nutrients, and other amendments throughout the plant’s life cycle. This formula has plenty of nutrients to last up to two weeks before you need to supplement its nutrient concentration.

Pro tip: Its bags can double as containers. Just cut the top off, plant your cannabis, add some holes on the bottom for drainage and aeration, and you are good to go.

Now that you know which ready-to-use soils are the best for your cannabis plant, you can start planting your seeds or clones. If you need more help with getting your grow started, enroll in CTU online cannabis training program.
