Identification cards in the center of the patient's marijuana, qualifying conditions for a medical card in Florida

Medical Marijuana Card

In November of 2016, Florida legalized medical marijuana under Amendment 2 of the Florida Medical Marijuana Legalization Initiative. There has been some back and forth about THC content in Florida's medical cannabis but now full-THC products are approved. There are a handful of qualifying conditions for a medical card in Florida, although not as many as most states.

Florida offers medical marijuana to its residents. Qualifying for a Florida medical marijuana card will require you to visit a medical professional. The Office of Medical Marijuana Use helps regulate this process in the Sunshine State. The office ensures that people who do not have a qualifying condition do not receive a Florida medical marijuana card. So, the question is, how do you get medical marijuana in Florida?

Marijuana is still federally illegal which is why state governments are the ones legalizing and managing the state’s medical marijuana program. States that have legalized recreational marijuana might have more relaxed medical programs. Below are different pieces of information you need to know about qualifying conditions for a medical card in Florida

Qualifying Conditions For a Medical Card in Florida

There are states that have relatively relaxed medical marijuana qualifying conditions. Florida is not one of those states. Florida medical marijuana doctors are less relaxed than in states where marijuana is recreationally legal.

Here are the qualifying conditions for a medical card in Florida:

  • PTSD
  • Seizures
  • Epilepsy
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Glaucoma
  • Chronic muscle spasms
  • HIV/AIDS
  • ALS
  • Cancer

How To Apply For Medical Marijuana In Florida

The Florida medical marijuana application process is relatively simple and goes as follows:

  • Take an eligibility test online to see if you have any Florida medical marijuana conditions. You want to do this as you will have to pay to schedule a visit with a medical marijuana doctor. These appointments vary in cost and there are often deals online on websites like Groupon for medical marijuana doctors.
  • Schedule your appointment with the doctor and see if they will give you a recommendation. Bringing pertinent medical files is going to be important. If you can show that you have one or multiple conditions that impede your daily life through pain, you will get a recommendation.
  • You will need to bring a Florida ID to prove residency in the state. A lease or mortgage agreement can also be used in place of a Florida ID if you have an out-of-state driver’s license
  • If you are given a recommendation you will then submit an application with a $75 dollar fee to the state of Florida.
  • The state can take up to a month to process the application so keep this in mind.
  • Once your application is processed you will receive your card in the mail. You can then use it to go to any dispensary.
  • You will have to renew your license yearly which will require a fee. It will say your expiration date on your card.
  • Keep in mind that your card is only good for Florida and your right to marijuana possession doesn’t carry over to other states. If the state has recreational marijuana, you will be fine but otherwise you could be arrested.

How Much Marijuana Can You Buy Monthly?

There are limits of how much Florida medical weed you can purchase per month. This differs whether you are purchasing flower, edibles, or concentrates. The limit for flower is 2.5 ounces over the course of a 35-day period. You are going to be prescribed a certain amount of cannabis per month. You have no requirement to purchase the entire amount at once as you can visit the dispensary multiple times per week.

Regardless of the product that you have, you need to have your medical card with you at all times. Keeping concentrates in the packaging that you got it from is important. People are arrested daily due to having a medical marijuana card yet still purchasing black market cannabis products.

Possession of a personal amount of flower is usually just a misdemeanor. Possession without a medical card of concentrates can be a serious felony charge. Florida marijuana laws are relatively strict although some cities like Tampa have decriminalized personal amounts within the city limits.

Consumption in public is still illegal unless you are smoking a non-THC product.

What About Children?

Children can qualify for a medical marijuana card in Florida. The difference is that there will need to be two physicians to approve this rather than one. Minors will also never be able to enter a dispensary so there will be a card for their caretaker. The caretaker must be a parent or guardian and over the age of 21 years old.
