Cannabis tinctures are one of the easiest products to dose. All you need to do is to press the top of the dropper, suck up some cannabis oil, and drop it into your food or beverage or directly under your tongue. It is that easy.

If you are wondering how you can make your own cannabis tincture, it is super easy. All you need is some cannabis flowers or concentrate. Here, we provide you with a simple cannabis tincture recipe so you can make your own at home.

What Is THC Tincture?

Cannabis tinctures are concentrated cannabis extracts, traditionally made using a high-proof alcohol base. High-proof alcohol is used to dissolve the plant’s active ingredients and as a base for the end product.

THC tinctures offer users many benefits, including:

  • Low calories
  • Long-lasting effects
  • Long shelf life
  • Multiple delivery methods
  • Fast-acting effects with sublingual absorption

THC tincture’s high alcohol content (60-70%) gives it a long shelf life (3-5 years) but has a bitter flavor. In order to offset the harsh taste, manufacturers may use additional ingredients to give the herbal tincture a better flavor.

A glycerin THC tincture features a vegetable glycerin base and no alcohol. Alcohol and glycerin tinctures are found in dropper bottles, making them easy to dose and drop under the tongue for fast absorption.

THC Tincture Ingredients

  • Cannabis flower or concentrate
  • Grinder
  • Baking dish with clear cover
  • Oven thermometer
  • Glass jar
  • High proof alcohol (190 proof grain alcohol preferred, NOT isopropyl rubbing alcohol)*
  • Coffee filter
  • Tincture dropper bottle
  • Funnel

* Use 750 mL of high-proof alcohol for every ounce of cannabis flower used. Use less alcohol for a stronger tincture.

How to Make THC Tincture: Room Temperature Method

Warning: Alcohol is extremely flammable. Use extreme caution when using alcohol near an open flame.

THC tinctures can be produced using the room temperature method, which allows the cannabis material to soak for a long period of time at room temperature. The long soak allows the alcohol to dissolve more of the lipids, waxes, and chlorophyll to create a full spectrum Rick Simpson Oil (RSO).

Many users believe that extracting the entire range of active ingredients (cannabinoids, terpenes, lipids, waxes) can enhance the entourage effect of the cannabis tincture.

Follow these steps to make room temperature THC tincture:

  1. Activate the plant’s cannabinoids by decarboxylating the material (Decarboxylation is not necessary if you plan to purge the alcohol with heat):
    1. Preheat the oven to 212º F (100º C)
    2. Spread the cannabis material evenly onto the baking dish with a clear cover.
    3. Place an oven thermometer on top of the cannabis material and cover the baking dish.
    4. Put the baking dish into the pre-heated oven. Every 10 minutes, check the temperature reading in the baking dish and note when it reaches 212º F (100º C).
    5. When the temperatures reach 212º F (100º C), heat the baking sheet for 1 hour and 20 minutes. Regularly check the temperature and adjust the oven as needed if the temperature is out of range.
    6. After 1 hour and 20 minutes, turn off the oven and carefully remove the baking dish from the oven using an oven mitt.
    7. Allow the baking dish to cool for 30 minutes before removing the cover.
  2. Place the cannabis in a tightly sealed jar.
  3. Put the alcohol into the jar ensuring that the cannabis is completely submerged.
  4. Allow the mixture to sit for at least 24 hours. Many users allow the mixture to sit for up to 3 months, shaking the jar every day to dissolve more cannabinoids. Over time, the  alcohol mixture can turn green or brown.
  5. Strain into a coffee filter-lined funnel into the dark-colored dropper bottle. Write down the date and store in a cool and dark place.

How to Consume THC Tinctures

As a first-time user, it is important to start with the lowest dose possible and gradually build up to your desired effects. We recommend starting off with 1 to 2 mg of cannabinoids under the tongue, about 4 times a day.

Effects should appear within minutes due to the fast absorption method under the tongue. Keeping a journal can allow users to track responses to the dosage. After about 4 to 5 days, increase the dose by 2 to 3 milligrams and continue to increase every 4 or 5 days until the desired dose (maximum therapeutic benefits and no adverse effects) is reached.
