As you become comfortable with cannabis strains and growing a cannabis garden, you will get to learn more about the cannabis industry and cannabis products. The experience will help you to look forward to new challenges. You may want to explore the idea of planting different marijuana strains that you have never heard of before. If you are growing marijuana for recreational use, you might want to take up the challenge of growing unpopular strains or those grown by commercial marijuana grow operations. However, it is important to know what you are getting yourself into and the things required.

The Operation

For those running large cannabis grow operations, the flowering period may take a long time since you are planting a vast array of cannabis strains. On the other hand, for small growers, things such as the yields, flowering periods and feeding requirements have to be taken into consideration. It can be very risky for you. Commercial growers tend to try and avoid using cannabis strains that they are not familiar with. Why? Well, they may not think it is worth the money, time and labor. So, if you are a small cannabis grower, you may want to consider these things as well.

The Risks

Usually though, marijuana growers will want to tackle the risk by crossbreeding their plants so as to get higher yields. In addition, lowering the risks means that you have to consider using cannabis strains that require low maintenance and shorter flowering cycles. Many cannabis strains are considered hard to grow. These are usually known as landrace strains, which means that they have grown in a specific location without having to put them through the hybridization cycle.

There are different variations of the landrace strains and so each will require varying needs. Let's take a closer look at the landrace strains to give you examples of the difficulty in growing these marijuana plants. This will help you to see the challenges and risks associated with it.

Colombian Gold

Colombian Gold is a sativa strain that falls into the ‘landrace' category. You will usually find these grown in the Columbian mountains. This type of strain was made popular about a century ago because of its high quality. It was forgotten for a while until its return when it was used to create the Skunk1 strain. The Columbian Gold is hard to grow because of the large stature and longer flowering time. If you were to produce it indoors, it would require a lot of pruning and you also need a lot of space since it grows fast and could take over your space in no time.

San Fernando Valley OG

The San Fernando Valley OG is from California. It is a dense hybrid strain and hard to tame. It requires a lot of nutrients and the flowering period is also longer than usual. This is one of the cannabis strains that consumes a lot of magnesium and calcium. Deficiency will occur if you do not prune in the early stages.

Chocolate Thai

The Chocolate Thai is also a landrace strain from California. It, too, has a long flowering cycle similar to those grown in Southeastern Asian climates. In fact, the flowering period takes up to fourteen weeks. If you have the patience, time and space in growing this cannabis strain, you will have a good harvest.

Training Your Marijuana Plants

In any event, you have to learn how to train hard-to-grow plants in the ‘landrace' category.  You have to pay attention to the structure of your marijuana buds, its maturity and its feeding needs. The end product should be your ultimate goal and so you have to be on top of things.
