In the United States, 25 states currently have legislation enacted for the possession and use of legalized medical marijuana. Each state has differing policies. However, the trend is moving towards national legalization of cannabis for medical purposes.
However, for one state, legalization goes one step further, allowing recreational marijuana as well. Washington DC has also decriminalized possession and use of marijuana for recreational purposes. The sale of marijuana in DC is still illegal. Colorado is paving the way for legal marijuana use by allowing the sale of weed and is generating massive attention to watch how they accomplish it.
Colorado Marijuana: Medical to Recreational
Amendment 20, which passed in 2000 legalized the use of medical marijuana in “the Centennial State”. Colorado Amendment 64, which passed 12 years later increased the possession limits and permitted “consumption” in a manner similar to that of alcohol.
It was on May 28, 2013, that Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper signed several bills into law that implemented a number of recommendations made by the Task Force on the Implementation of Amendment 64. The Colorado Department of Revenue then adopted final regulations for recreational marijuana establishments.
In September of that year, the city of Denver made headlines by enacting a city ordinance for such establishments. It was a long political road, but recreational marijuana became legal.
A status report by the Drug Policy Alliance was released showing the benefits that legalization of recreational marijuana has provided.
The report examined the period from when the first retail marijuana establishments opened for business on January 1st, 2014 to January 1st of this year. It demonstrated a decrease in crime, significant judicial savings, a significant revenue increase, and a decrease in traffic fatalities.
As other states review their policies and learn these positive statistics, it is likely that the country will begin to see other states follow suit. Though DC and Colorado were the first, it is highly unlikely they will be the last.
In Colorado, any adult with government-issued identification such as a driver's license who is over the age of 21 can legally possess up to one ounce of THC. The law is written so that the ounce can consist of buds, concentrates, or edibles. Cannabis seeds are also available.
Furthermore, there is no registration requirements and non-residents while in the state are provided the same rights. Non-residents are not able to purchase more than ¼ ounce per transaction. Stores can be open between 8 PM and 12 AM. The use of marijuana is not legal for consumption “openly and publicly”.
The legislation of Colorado regarding marijuana is progressive. However, the marijuana debate is indeed heading towards increased legalization. Because of this, the opportunity is ripe to learn the marijuana industry, and opportunities for an exceptional career are increasing.
