If you’re ready to celebrate the unofficial start of summer, our guide shows you how to honor our fallen heroes and elevate your memorial day weekend. Beyond the backyard barbecues and outdoor fun, Memorial Day is a somber holiday honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.

Whether you spend your Memorial Day at home or outdoors, it is important to spend a few moments honoring those who have served and have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Regardless of how you choose to remember our fallen heroes, you can still celeblaze with friends and family.

Visit Your Local Veterans Cemetery

National veterans cemeteries give us a dedicated space to commemorate those who have fought and died in our wars. Most states have a veterans cemetery. If you live near one, head over during the Memorial Day weekend to pay your respects.

During Memorial Day weekend, the national veterans cemeteries may offer free admission and extended hours. Stop by to show respect and contemplate their sacrifice.

Check the Department of Veterans Affairs Cemetery Listing to find one near you.

Pause for a Moment of Remembrance at 3 p.m.

On Memorial Day at 3 p.m. (local time), pause to reflect on the sacrifices made by Americans who died defending our nation. In 2000, the National Moment of Remembrance resolution was passed to establish a national minute of silence for the fallen. Now, we can all unite as a country for a moment of remembrance.
