As of March 2017, the Israel cabinet was able to approve the decriminalization of marijuana use on a personal level. The Justice and Public Service ministries were the part of government that formulated the proposal. If you are caught with weed and you are a first time offender and you were smoking the weed in public, you would be hit with a fine instead of being criminally imprisoned. The fine would be $270 for the first time offender. But, if you are caught a second time, you would still not be criminally charged and you would receive a fine double that of the first time offender.

On the third infraction, you would be put on probation with a criminal record, which could only be expunged in a specific time frame. For the fourth offense, there would be no fines, but a criminal charge. The government uses these fines to help with drug treatment and drug education.
