State of the Cannabis Industry in New Jersey
In New Jersey, cannabis is legal for both medical and recreational use.
While New Jersey voters approved adult-use marijuana in November 2020, there is no regulatory framework for the commercial production and sale of cannabis (as of July 2021). The New Jersey Department of Treasury hopes to create a section on their website with more information. Adult-use sales could start as early as the end of 2022.
For medical patients, the cannabis possession limit is up to 3 oz per month. Patients can obtain cannabis products from a caregiver or at retail outlets. However, the state does not allow home cultivation for patients or caregivers.
When the state's recreational market launches, it is set to be one of, if not, the largest adult-use cannabis market on the East Coast. The state has a population of about 8.8 million residents and is one of the most densely populated states in the country. Due to its large market size, New Jersey will have a wealth of business and employment opportunities in the near future.
Based on projections by cannabis data firm Headset, first-year revenue projections indicate that the state could reach $740 million. Keep in mind, these projections are based on Massachusetts’ first complete year of sales and cross-border shopping from Pennsylvania and New York. The cross-border shopping could be limited now that New York has legalized cannabis.
New Jersey is ready to experience an explosion of growth. Will you be ready? Cannabis education from CTU can get you there.
