Back in the mid-1800s, some 300,000 individuals flocked to California in hopes of finding gold. It's estimated that these “forty-niners” recovered 20 million ounces of the precocious mineral through dredging alone, with a value of roughly $28 billion. Fast forward to today and there's a new Gold Rush, only this time it's green. Marijuana is creating medical marijuana jobs across the world!

Medical marijuana is one of the fastest-growing, most lucrative industries in the country. According to a recent poll conducted by Quinquennial University National, a whopping 89% of Americans support the legalization of marijuana for medicinal purposes – and this isn't a trend that's expected to go away anytime soon. As of writing this, there are 24 states plus the District of Columbia that have legalized marijuana for medical use. With this ever-growing support, and demand, comes thousands of new medical marijuana jobs.

Medical Marijuana Jobs

So, what kind of job opportunities has the medical marijuana industry created? While you may already some of them, others will likely surprise you. One of the most common medical marijuana jobs is that of a grower. Some people are stuck in the mindset that growing medical marijuana is easy, with plants requiring nothing more than water and light.

However, medical marijuana is highly regulated from state to state, and growers are required to meet strict standards for quality control purposes. Furthermore, marijuana plants are susceptible to a wide variety of pests like aphids, caterpillars, worms, whiteflies, mealybugs, fungus gnats and more. Assuming you have the necessary skills along with an entrepreneurial spirit, you can embark on a lucrative and rewarding new career as a medical marijuana grower.

Growers often work alongside other workers whose cannabis job is to trim and prepare the buds. Medical marijuana plants don't grow perfect, ready-to-smoke – or vape/consume – buds. Rather, a worker must carefully cut and then trim the plants' buds. Doing so not only makes the buds more appealing, but it eliminates unnecessary plant material with low concentrations of THC, CBD and other cannabinoids.

Trimmers must learn to distinguish between the different parts of a bud to maximize harvest yield while minimizing waste. Budtending is one of the most popular medical marijuana jobs in America today.

In addition to growers and trimmers, marijuana dispensaries also need workers to sell the final product. Known as “budtenders,” they play an important role in the cultivation and sale of medical marijuana. They are required to learn each individual strain, including its flavor, aroma and effects – and that's no easy task considering that there are hundreds of different strains, with more strains being created on a regular basis. Using this information, budtenders can recommend specific strains for customers based on their unique needs.

Of course, this is really just the tip of the iceberg when speaking about the opportunities in the marijuana industry. There are many types of medical marijuana jobs.
