Is MiracleGro Good for Marijuana Growing?

January 16, 2021 by Gretchen Lubbe

MiracleGro Good for Marijuana Growing is used on this plant with a hand under it.

MiracleGro Used on this Marijuana Plant

Marijuana growing can be one of the greatest pleasures in the world. Starting with a single seed or a clone, and nurturing it through to the flowering stage provides joy to the soul. It only makes sense that your grow is priceless, and you want to do anything possible to make them grow big and thrive. With so many products on the market for this purpose, MiracleGro is no exception.

Many growers are tempted to use MiracleGro for a boost to growing ops. With a name like that, how could it not work, right? Some advice would heed you to hold your horses. MiracleGro might sound like the ideal cannabis growing product, but it’s not all it’s made out to be. Our intention here is not to simply assume or deny the wonder of MiracleGro, but to provide concrete information that’s related to cannabis growing.

What is MiracleGro, Really?

As one of the better-known fertilizers in the world, MiracleGro was first developed in the late 1940s. From there, it has become a household staple in the fertilizer market, loved by horticulturalists around the world. By boosting the growth rate of plants, it boosts the production of new cell structures – generally speaking.

To be more precise, MiracleGro is designed for houseplants and gardens by providing additional nutrients that normal soil usually lacks. MiracleGro contains nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus, with different combinations of the three also available. With that said, it makes sense, on the one hand, to assume that MiracleGro would also be ideal for growing marijuana. But how true is this, really? Let’s find out in the next section.

The MiracleGro Cannabis Argument

A lot of first-time growers use MiracleGro for marijuana, unknowing of the harsh truth that it’s really not ideal for this purpose. The question, ‘is MiracleGro good for marijuana growing’ becomes easier to answer once we begin to investigate what seems to be the main issue with MiracleGro: It provides only one formula of nutrients used throughout a plant’s entire life cycle.

Cannabis plants go through several different stages, and hence need a different combination of nutrients to ensure thriving growth. While the one-size-fits-all approach may initially help the plant, the nutrients therein are not adequate to sustain a cannabis plant through its whole life cycle. Another important factor is that MiracleGro has an extended-release of nutrients, meaning the nutrients may be stored for months and only released later. The result of this? Burning and loss of harvest.

The other problem with MiracleGro marijuana among tried and testes growers, is said to be the taste. Having tried several strains that were grown with it, growers have attested to the product having a harsh chemical after taste that ruins the whole flower. A probable reason for this is that Miracle-Gro isn’t formulated for plants that are meant to be burned like weed.

Now, let’s get something straight at this point of the argument. It’s not that there’s something inherently wrong with MiracleGro nutrients, but if want to use them successfully for growing good quality cannabis, then you’d better figure out your formulas. For example, using regular soil, MiracleGro with its high nutrient index can work for the vegetative stage, and then you can use their “bloom” version for the flowering stage.

The above scenario seems risky, doesn’t it? Commonly speaking, why would you look for trouble when there are so many nutrient systems out there that are specifically formulated to grow cannabis? Why not choose to invest in better cannabis nutrients guaranteed to result in a bountiful harvest?

With that said, we need to also report the very few growers who have reported positive things about MiracleGro and marijuana. However, those who find success with this method use vastly watered-down amounts of MiracleGro.

What is the Best MiracleGro Alternative?

You can minimize the use of fertilizers by using the best genetics available and by maintaining a perfect growing environment. However, even so, you will most likely need some fertilizer at some point! So, when choosing your fertilizer, it is essential to avoid extended-release options and also, to use different fertilizers for different stages.

You can even make your own fertilizer uniquely tailored to your plants. Many experienced growers take to this option as it enables them more control of the growing process and often gives a greater sense of accomplishment.

Alternatively, there are plenty of other options out there. Some of the best on the market are: Perlite and vermiculite fertilizers for soil, in addition to a good all-round cannabis nutrient product such as Bio Bizz, Advanced Nutrients, Golden Tree, General Hydroponics

In Conclusion: No Miracle for Marijuana

Despite assuming notions that MiracleGro can be used for any living plant, the plain answer to the question of ‘Is MiracleGro good for marijuana growing?’ is: No. MiracleGro is definitely not a marijuana farmer’s best friend. Newbies often make the mistake of assuming that MiracleGro is ubiquitous on the planet of plant growing. With that said, it’s not to say that it’s completely impossible to grow marijuana with it, but remain aware of the fact that risks are rampant!

While the MiracleGro formula will work fine in the vegetative stage of a cannabis plant’s life, the nutrient build-up will negatively affect the flowering stage. This is something you’d rather want to avoid, by logical parameters. When choosing soil, fertilizers and/or nutrients for your marijuana plants, be sure to find cannabis-suitable counterparts only.

On the flipside, this product does work miraculously for plants with simple grow-cycles. Cannabis, with its different stages of growth and blooming, requires its own blend of nutrients, and according to many, is precisely why growing marijuana can be so rewarding and fulfilling. It offers even experienced growers a new challenge.
