In this Blueberry strain review, we’ll give you the ins and outs of a cannabis strain that has been around since the 1970s! Not too many strains stand the test of time quite like Blueberry has been able to.
Most strains fall out of favor due to newer, more exciting strains with higher potency and new terpene profiles. But, the Blueberry strain continues to impress cannabis users and remains a favorite to this day!
Blueberry Strain Genetics
This marijuana strain dates back to the 70's when an American breeder named DJ Short created it by crossing three landraces: Afghani, Thai, and Purple Thai.
The Afghani landrace is a derivative of the native plants that grow in the Afghanistan region. Some of the earliest cannabis plants are believed to come from the region and this relaxing indica passing on its resin-drenched bud qualities to its offspring.
Thai is a sativa landrace that has spawned many child-strains, including the Haze lineage. It was brought to the US in the 70's and has been used to breed new strains since.
Purple Thai is a cross of landraces as well, as a combination of Oaxacan Highland Gold and Chocolate Thai, another Thai region landrace.
As you can see, Blueberry is created through breeding some of the best landraces known to man. Perhaps that is why it is still popular to this day!
This indica-dominant strain was developed in the 70s, won awards in the early 2000s, and is still being grown and bred today.
Some very well-known strains have come from the Blueberry lineage. Blue Dream and Blueberry Cookies use Blueberry as a parent-strain.
Blue Dream is a cross of Blueberry and Haze, probably bringing out more of the Thai landrace traits in both lineages. It’s probably the most widespread strain and you can’t mention weed without mentioning Blue Dream.
Blue Cookies is a cross of Blueberry and Thin Mints GSC. Combining a classic with a new-age superstar, this child-strain will almost definitely become a fan-favorite in the coming years as the genetics become more available.
Those looking to produce their own Blueberry ganja can find clones and seeds at reputable nurseries.
Blueberry Strain Yield
Blueberry is a high producing indica variety. Growers can expect to harvest around 3-6 ounces per square foot of plant. This is among the top producers created today, even though it’s been around for decades.
Unlike many newer cannabis strains, this strain does best outdoors. It spreads laterally like a traditional indica. Make sure the plants have ample space to grow horizontally and use techniques like topping and pruning to maximize bud production.
It is a heavy feeder that loves organic fertilizer to boost growth.
Blueberry Strain Flowering Time
Blueberry takes 9 weeks of flowering. The buds are coated in resin, dense, and chock-full of hues of purples and blues. The colors really pop if the plants are exposed to lower than normal temperatures during the early stages of flowering.
The purples and blues set the stage for the bright orange hairs and milky white/amber trichomes to stand out among the colas.
Since this strain does best outdoors, you can expect to harvest it mid-October in the Northern Hemisphere.
If you let the trichomes mature to become fully amber, the THC levels will drop and the body-high effects of the strain will shine more.
This is already a relaxing strain, so you can either cut back on that by harvesting when the trichomes are all white or ride the body-high wave and harvest when the majority of the trichomes are amber in color.
Blueberry Strain THC Percentage
Blueberry is known to have THC percentages ranging from 16-24%. Being a classic cannabis strain, it may be surprising to know that it can still hang with the dankensteins of today’s marijuana industry.
The high is relaxing and is known to creep up slowly before it peaks. It helps calm the mind and the body at the same time, creating a euphoric experience that indica lovers crave.
It can easily numb the brain and the body before sending you to bed.
Flavor & Aroma
The essence of blueberries runs rampant in this strain, which is clearly the main reason for the naming of this delicious cannabis strain. The fact that the buds are purple and blue was probably just a finishing touch!
The aroma and flavor also feature a sense of woody pine, creating a more fresh essence that combines well with the berry aroma. The flavor also shows hints of vanilla on the exhale.
The essence of Blueberry is so unique and powerful that a blind taste test of this bud would probably have many cannabis users guessing correctly, even if they’ve never tried Blueberry before!
It’s known for being rich in Myrcene, Pinene, and Caryophyllene, all terpenes found on the relaxing side of the spectrum. Many indicas are rich in these specific terpenes.
Myrcene is the relaxing terpene.
Pinene is abundant in most plant life and is known to fight depression, stress, and inflammation.
Caryophyllene has a spicy essence and also fights inflammation.
A combination of terpenes like this lends itself well to medicinal marijuana!
