As commercial marijuana farming becomes prevalent due to the new laws governing marijuana in many states today, sustainability is the hot topic. For these farming practices to become sustainable, it means that the grower has to maintain continuity in its output. Accurate inputs have to be provided to ensure a thriving and healthy ecosystem as the outputs are taken from the owner's land.
The soil has to be amended. The crop introduction has to be diverse. The sourcing water has to be efficient in order to explore sustainability. For many marijuana cultivators who are emerging as a part of the cannabis industry, sustainable farming has not answered their needs. For this reason, many are resorting to regenerative marijuana farming instead. So, what exactly is this regenerative process?
The Regenerative Process
In agriculture the regenerative process is defined by a systematic farming practice and principle used to enrich the soil, increase biodiversity, enhance the ecosystem and improves the watershed. This practice has been part of the agricultural industry for many years. Most of the approaches used with this practice were replaced by commercial farmers who preferred larger yields. The idea is not to sustain the farm when it is failing. That is not the best way to approach this.
Holistic Approach
For an organic and holistic approach to farming, the regenerative marijuana process is best because it produces marijuana that is bio-diverse. In other words, compassion for the marijuana plant is the ultimate goal as it is in wine vineyards. The marijuana strain grown in this environment produces a top-tiered yield with unique traits. The regenerative farming practices for marijuana is more than being sustainable. It is about putting life into your garden and then your crop. It means maintaining a higher quality agricultural system. Let us take a look at the core principles of this practice.
The Concept
Central to regenerative farming is the concept of conscious cultivation. What is this and what does it involved? It involves providing plants with not just want things that are immediately needed, but what is potential necessary. As a farmer, you have to see the marijuana plant as more than part of your crop. With regenerative marijuana farming, you get to see the biological and eco-systemic fit of the plant.
Seed to Seed
When you administer the regenerative practice it will involve a seed to seed process. What does this mean? It means that you are observing the whole life cycle of your marijuana plant. You are also creating your own cannabis seeds. There are some marijuana farmers who might consider using clones, but the ultimate goal, whether you use the regenerative practice or clones, is to create unique marijuana genetics.

You develop a relationship with your plant by working on it yourself in a distinct environment; something you could not have achieved if you were growing it in a different climate or if you preferred to have someone else do it all for you.
The Improvement of Biodiversity
Another aspect and consideration of regenerative marijuana farming is pursuing biodiversity as part of your principles. How do you do this? This includes utilizing certain products and tools like:
- Composting
- Cover crops
- No-till farming method
- Worm farming
- Integration of farm animals
- Crop rotation
The main idea is for you to grow your marijuana plants as a means of sustaining yourself and creating habitation for wild animals and pollinators that are found on the farm. This is a way to host several kinds of animals so you can improve the land and surroundings.
